Illiteracy robs over a third of Cambodians of the opportunity to improve their standard of living and to read God’s Word.

Decades of war and genocide devastated Cambodia’s education system. But illiteracy is also the result of poverty. Poor families depend on their children to help bring in an income rather than attend school, and few have the resources to pay for uniforms or books.

The Bible Society in Cambodia is partnering with local churches to offer Scripture-based literacy training to the disadvantaged in rural areas. Over three years, this project will reach 8,100 people, enabling them to read the Scriptures at worship and for their own personal growth and contribute to the development of their communities.

In July 2007, a team from Bible Society saw for themselves the impact of this literacy project. In a remote village in Svay Rieng, they were astounded when three women read aloud to them from the Khmer New Testaments they had received at the end of their course. They had learned to read in just 3 months!
What difference does learning to read make?
“Before I had to rely on the preacher to explain God’s Word to me,” said one woman. “Now I can read the Bible for myself!” She is now sharing her faith with others, and reading tracts to her neighbours.
