China - Bible Distribution
As the number of Chinese believers explodes, so too does the need for the Scriptures. This vibrant church desperately needs access to God’s Word so it can establish deep roots with which to stand firm and flourish.
Many poorer believers in China’s rural areas simply cannot afford even the cheapest Bible. So scarce is God’s precious Word that any one Bible distributed may eventually be used by hundreds of people. Some churches don’t even have one Bible for their entire congregation.
The United Bible Societies, with the approval of the Chinese Government, have been printing and distributing Bibles through the Amity Press since 1987. Over that time, more than 50 million Bibles have been printed and distributed within China. (A Bible printed at the Amity Press, marked with the Government’s printing authorisation, cannot be confiscated from a Chinese citizen.)
Wee-Seng Kua co-ordinates the Bible Society’s work in China and has witnessed many scenes like these. On one occasion, he was involved in an effort to provide 5,000 Scriptures for those in need. Arriving at the first village of Jianzhuang, they were amazed to see 8,000 people waiting eagerly for them.
Christians from other villages had also heard of the Bible distribution. They had been afraid they might not receive any Bible by the time the van reached their villages, so they came to Jianzhuang - on foot and by truck – some travelling quite a distance.
Wee-Seng explained: “They were so excited by our arrival that they broke into applause as we were ushered into the crowd. We were moved by the sight of so many Christians waiting expectantly for their copy of the Bible…”
The future is extremely bright for the Church in China and for the message of peace and love that it is bringing to this emerging super power. However, please don’t underestimate the enormity of the task before us as we seek to support the Church in China. Without your help, we simply won’t be able to fulfil our mission.
