The need
A third of India’s children live in urban slums – struggling for survival in desperate poverty. In the slums and villages of Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh, Bible Society is partnering with REAP (Relief Education, Evangelism and Aid Program) International to offer children like these a better future.

The REAP Literacy Project promotes English language education through Bible reading and is already producing exciting results.

Making a difference
A whole new world opens up for these disadvantaged children when they gain basic English literacy skills. They do better at school, and even for those who don’t attend school it means more employment opportunities later. But because God’s Word is the focus of their learning, there is the added bonus of young hearts and minds being transformed by the Gospel!

At the completion of their course, each child receives a Bible as a gift and an incentive to continue with their education. Not only individual children but entire families are accepting Christ, and the literacy program is opening the way for people to gather around God’s Word where there are no churches.

REAP depends on your generosity to meet the increasing demand for this project.

Changed lives
When they’re not in her literacy class, many of the children Nirmala teaches wander aimlessly around their village – left to fend for themselves while their parents search for work. Little wonder that Jesus’ story of the lost sheep had such deep resonance for them.

“They asked so many questions,” Nirmala says. “Why would Jesus search for the one sheep when there were ninety-nine others? They were moved when I explained that He doesn’t want to lose even one. These children experienced the love of God – they came to know that Jesus loves little children.”
